Physical assault

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 3.7% of persons in the Northern Territory (5,400) experienced physical assault, which was higher than the national victimisation rate (2.4%). Of these:

  • approximately three in five (61% or 3,300) had their most recent incident reported to police
  • almost four in five (78% or 4,200) believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident, which was higher than the national rate (55%).

Threatened assault

An estimated 3.9% of persons in the Northern Territory (5,700) experienced face-to-face threatened assault, which was higher than the national victimisation rate (2.6%).

Approximately 87% of persons in the Northern Territory (4,700) who experienced face-to-face threatened assault believed alcohol or any other substance contributed to the most recent incident, which was higher than the national rate (49%).

Break-in and attempted break-in

During 2017–18, an estimated 6.0% of households in the Northern Territory (4,100) experienced a break-in, which was higher than the national rate (2.5%) Of these households, 78% (3,200) had the most recent incident reported to police.

During the same time period, an estimated 4.5% of households in the Northern Territory (3,100) experienced an attempted break-in, which was higher than the national rate (2.2%). Of these households, 58% (1,800) had the most recent incident reported to police, which was higher than the national reporting rate (39%).

Theft from motor vehicle

In the Northern Territory, an estimated 4.1% of households (2,800) experienced theft from a motor vehicle during the 2017–18 reference period.

Malicious property damage

During the 2017–18 reference period, an estimated 7.0% of households in the Northern Territory (4,800) experienced malicious property damage, which was higher than the national victimisation rate (5.1%). Of these households in the Northern Territory that experienced malicious property damage, 63% (3,000) had the most recent incident reported to police, which was higher than the national reporting rate (52%).
